I craft engaging narratives through design

Hey I’m Gemma - a First Class Honours graphic design graduate from Arts University Bournemouth, now working at Sky Creative as a designer. I am a multidisciplinary designer with the aim of bringing people together through engaging stories and impactful designs.

I am passionate about every aspect of the design process, from ideation to final execution. My graduate placement at Sky Creative has been instrumental in my development as a designer, pushing me to new heights. Working with dynamic teams across branding, digital media, motion graphics, advertising, and broadcast for Sky News and Sky Sports, I have honed my skills in a variety of disciplines.

I thrive on the diversity of design challenges, including brand identity development, website redesign, digital artwork, set design, and social media content creation. Additionally, I have advanced my animation skills, creating captivating promos for Now TV, enhancing Sky News broadcasts, and crafting engaging title sequences.

Experience

  • Secured a highly competitive one-year graduate placement at Sky Creative, selected as one of three from 1,000 applicants. Collaborated with cross-functional teams on branding, digital media, motion graphics, advertising, and broadcasting for Sky News and Sky Sports. Developed projects from concept to final design, both independently and in teams. Contributed to content for television, web, mobile, and broadcast platforms. Executed tasks including brand identity development, website redesigns, digital artwork, and social media content creation. Leveraged animation skills to produce promos for Now TV, enhance Sky News broadcasts, and create engaging title sequences.

  • Managed concurrent projects for diverse clientele including The Design Museum, Reuters, and UCAS. Developed engaging social media content and curated imagery for various brands. Demonstrated adaptability by implementing client-requested revisions. Conducted design investigations and market research to inform innovative project development.

  • Worked with the R&D packaging team on creating packaging solutions for multiple products. Gained experience in the manufacturing of gifts. Learned the process of creating a new piece of packaging from doing research and development, prototyping, and testing.

  • Crafted content for renowned clients including Mentos, Smint, Pukka Pies. Managed simultaneous projects encompassing a spectrum of tasks, including crafting captivating social media posts, conceptualising innovative packaging designs, constructing engaging storyboards for animations, and revitalising established logos through rebranding initiatives.

  • Worked with the Google Studio team on multiple briefs with clients such as Google, Heinz, Grolsch, and No.1 Spirits. Created packaging designs, POS items, branding campaigns, in-store items, interactive events, etc. Collaborated with colleagues in the studio and online.

Achievements

  • For one of my uni competition briefs, I was tasked with creating a brand identity for Wadworth Brewery. I had to create a name and logo for their new brewery and design two beer cans and keg lenses. I won the national competition with my designs being chosen for their two new beers.

  • My project ‘Kinship’ was shortlisted by the Royal Society of Arts’ global Student Design Award 2023 for the brief Amplify Connections.

  • My project ‘Kinship’ was shortlisted for the 2023 Creative Conscious Award in Graphic Design.

  • I was honoured to receive the Sky Value Award for Creativity and Action-Oriented Excellence.

    Nominated by my manager, she wrote: “Gemma is a focused designer who brings creativity and purpose to her projects. She brings her ideas to life in a down-to-earth way, making a big impact without needing to be in the spotlight. Her quiet confidence is truly refreshing and makes her approach stand out”.

  • I volunteered to do a week-long challenge with LUSH to amend an awkward piece of packaging. I collaborated with a multi-disciplinary team to design user-friendly, sustainable packaging. Additionally, I demonstrated an innovative approach to problem-solving, contributing with ideas and sharing with colleagues. Finally, I presented our sustainable packaging idea to an industry panel in which our concept won best idea.

  • I created a small business called GemPrintStudio on Etsy where I sell typographical prints of song lyrics. I decided to start this business in my spare time as a hobby, try something new, and to challenge myself. I have currently sold over 300 prints.
